Now that you are having a baby, you will have to take care of yourself extra for the coming months. Many women thrive during pregnancy – their hair overgrows and has a lustrous shine, their complexion develops a healthy glow, their breasts swell, and a sexy cleavage occurs. These changes are due to the pregnancy hormone progesterone and the increased oxygen circulating throughout the body. Progesterone can also have a calming effect and help reduce anxiety, thus the calming feeling of satisfaction some pregnant women feel.
Unfortunately, not all women experience this “blossom” when they have a baby and find that their hair falls out and becomes oily, and their complexion cracks in spots.
However, there are things you can do to maintain good health.
Gum disease has been linked to premature labor, and if left untreated, it can lead to gum disease and tooth loss.
Hair growth speeds up, so your hair becomes thicker and shinier when you have a baby. Faster hair growth may also mean more hair loss because new hair is taking its place. Some women develop greasy hair when having a baby, and this is due to the stimulation of progesterone.
The hormone progesterone causes the glands in the skin to produce more sebum, so you may find that you break out in spots. Likewise, your skin can become dry and itchy. Use a skincare kit that is appropriate for your skin type and moisturizes it daily. Avoid scented shower gels and bubble baths as they can dry out your skin.
These symptoms occur if the skin elasticity becomes excessively stretched and appears as red lines, often on the breasts, stomach, and thighs. Not gaining weight helps to wear a supportive bra and moisturize regularly. After birth, the streaks will gradually start to fade and become less noticeable.
If you find that your skin is more sensitive to the sun than usual, use a moisturizer that contains UV protection. Some women develop a condition called melasma, a butterfly-shaped mask of dark skin across the face. This can be masked with makeup and will disappear after childbirth.
Legs and feet
It is common to feel tired and achy in the legs and feet when having a baby. Try to spend time with your feet raised each evening. Fluid retention sometimes causes your feet to swell, so you may need to purchase more oversized shoes.
